A new puppy can be just as much work as baby. Sooner , rather than later all of us will find some unexpected damage by our furry newcomer.
Puppies similar to toddlers explore their surroundings by putting things into their mouths despite dogs make great use of their vision and sense of smell.
Dogs are usually teething until the age of six months. Chewing on objects helps puppies to make sore gums feel better.
Unfortunately , dogs will not outgrow this as they mature. Therefore , as owners it is our responsibility to teach them which behaviours are acceptable and which are not.
Fortunately, by good training and lots of attention chewing can be directed to an appropriate object/toy. This will not just stop them destroying things around the house but more importantly it stops them jeopardising their own safety.

Some of the most common reasons why dogs chew:
• As a puppy, they were not taught what to chew and what not to chew on
• They might be just simply bored.
• They could suffer from separation anxiety.
• Or this behaviour is fear-related.
• They are seeking more attention.
A few easy ways to stop chewing?
• Puppy proof your home – Take responsibility for your own belongings
• Give your puppy lots of chew toys
• Supervise your dog- reduce the puppy’s living space while you are away.
( puppy proof area or crate)
• Give them a lots of attention
• While teething, try to freeze a wet washcloth for them to chew on
DO NOT PUNISH!!!
Dogs associate punishment with what they are doing at the not what they have done an hour ago. Please keep that in mind while educating your puppy.
