HOUSE TRAINING A NEW PUPPY
House training a new puppy is about consistency, patience, and lot of positive reinforcement.
Your goal is to teach good habits and build a strong bond with your pet.
It normally takes 4-6 months to fully house train a puppy, but others may take up to a year.
Size can be a predictor. Generally speaking, smaller dogs have smaller bladders and higher metabolisms and they also require more frequent trips outside.
Your puppy’s previous living condition is another factor. You may need to break your puppy’s old habits in order to establish more desirable ones to his/her new environment.
Please do not worry if there are setbacks during the training period. It is completely normal. As long as you continue the training and offer rewards, they will learn.
When to start House Training a Puppy?
I recommend that you begin house training your new puppy when she/he is between 12 weeks and 16 weeks old.
By this point , puppies have enough control of their bladder and bowel movements to learn how to hold it.
Your energy ( that counts the most)
Remember that your energy is a big factor in your house training efforts. If you feel nervous , impatient or try to rush a puppy to relieve herself, can also stress her out.
Positive reinforcement
Never punish your puppy for an accident or do anything to create a negative association with her bodily functions. Always stay calm and assertive and quietly remove the puppy to the place where you want her to go.
Setting a routine
Every morning, bring your puppy outside to the same area. It is very important to remain consistent throughout the training period so your puppy can learn the good habits.
Once your beloved puppy has successfully gone outside, do not forget to reward her or the good behaviour. A simple quiet approval or a puppy treat can get the message across .
It is very IMPORTANT you choose a training that is the most suitable for you and the environment you live in.
There are plenty of other techniques that can be used to achieve the same goal.
